the middle east - the Islamic centuries

     
 

course description

Spanning 800 years of history, this cross-cultural course examines the rise of Islam and its transformation into a universal faith embracing diverse peoples from the shores of the Atlantic all the way to China.  Special attention is given to Islamic civilization, with its splendid cities, high culture, and advanced science made possible by globalization of trade, ideas, and knowledge. 

Class sessions will consist of lectures, discussions of assigned readings, audio and visual presentations, and a visit to a Muslim Friday prayer service.

No prior knowledge of Islam is required.

Instructor: dr. robert hunter

Dr. Robert Hunter is a specialist in the history and culture of Islam and the Middle East.  He has lived and worked in many Middle East countries, knows Arabic, and has published widely.  For over 30 years, Dr. Hunter has taught cross-cultural courses on the encounter between “East” and “West” at universities in the United States and abroad.  Having received his Ph. D. degree from Harvard University, he taught at Kansas State University and Tulane University before coming to Indiana State University in 1999 where he is Professor of History.
