Mythos and logos

Course Description

The readings focus on key works of Sophocles, Ibsen, and Camus that pertain to the theme of the Fall of Man, the WOMEN OF TRACHIS, THE MASTER BUILDER, and THE FALL. As other works by these authors are read and discussed a more coherent understanding of the overall importance of these literary masterpieces will emerge. In effect, these three provide the MYTHOS of the course; the authors' other works will be examined to ascertain their potential as suitable LOGOS, or critique.

TEXTS:

  • Sophocles. THE COMPLETE PLAYS, translated by Paul Roche. Signet Classic.
  • Camus, Albert. THE FALL. Vintage Books.
  • Camus. THE STRANGER. Vintage Books.
