Course Description

This course will provide a broad introduction to the study of the family. Students will analyze and discuss contemporary family issues.

A sampling of the topics we will cover include … 

  • Definitions of family - traditional families, step families, adopted families, extended family, kinship, in-laws
  • Family and the media - how families have been portrayed over time in media has changed - The Cosby Show to Will and Grace to Modern Family
  • Family issues - domestic abuse, child abuse, sibling rivalry, the "sandwich generation"
  • Social issues - same-sex parents, gender construction, families and social/economic classes, families and geographic area
  • Family rituals across cultures - religion, weddings, holidays
