When Culture Changed Everything

Course DescriptionWe will examine several 20th century movements for social justice. We will focus on the communication practices and strategies used to "move" these efforts. Social movements make full use of popular culture to organize and mobilize mass support for change and action. Our focus will be these tactics and strategies. We will read the text of the significant speeches associated with movements; we will listen to the music created or used by the movements; we will look at movement "costumes" (hair style, dress) and language popularized by these movements; we will examine other artifacts--posters, news coverage, ceremonies, rituals, events (e.g. Woodstock). Our engagement with the popular communication of movements for social justice will help us develop an understanding of the concept of justice sought by each movement, the way social movements "work," and how we assess their effectiveness.
