course descriptionThis seminar focuses on four important figures of British and German Romanticism, one born before the era's defining event, the French Revolution (Goethe), and three born after it (Mary Shelley, John Keats, and Emily Bronte). Goethe, Keats, and Bronte all wrote their great works in their twenties and Mary Shelley began her masterpiece FRANKENSTEIN when only 18. Readings and discussions focus on their important imaginative works -- Goethe's SORROWS OF YOUNG WERTHER, Keats's "Ode to a Nightingale" and "Ode on a Grecian Urn," Shelley's gothic novel, and Bronte's WUTHERING HEIGHTS -- but also include Keats's letters, Bronte's poems, and film versions of the Bronte and Shelley works of fiction. |
Instructor: Dr. matthew brennan
Dr. Matthew Brennan, a poet and scholar of romanticism, has taught at ISU in the English Department since 1985 and began teaching in the Honors program in 1987. His courses range from freshman composition for Honors students to poetry writing to English Romantic Literature. He has published five volumes of poetry and is now writing his third critical study on romanticism. His book, THE GOTHIC PSYCHE, includes chapters on Shelley, Bronte, and Keats.
