This course will provide a broad introduction to the study of the
family. Students will analyze and discuss contemporary family issues.

Definitions of family - traditional families, step families, adopted families, extended family, kinship, in-laws

Family and the media - how families have been portrayed over time in media has changed - The Cosby Show to Will and Grace to Modern Family

Family issues - domestic abuse, child abuse, sibling rivalry, the "sandwich generation"

Social issues - same-sex parents, gender construction, families and social/economic classes, families and geographic area

Family rituals across cultures - religion, weddings, holidays
