“Classical Cultures of Greece and Rome” introduces students to the thought, art, and culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans. We shall examine a sampling of the works of these foundational cultures of Western civilization not to comprehend wholly their development but to introduce them, to consider them in the context of their history and tradition, and to see how these ancient cultures continue to influence our modern world and our individual lives. Our course will focus, in particular, upon questions, prevalent in classical art and thought, which have much resonance in our own time: How may each of us – as individuals, as members of families, as members of a larger society, and as beings in a vast and often baffling universe – best “know ourselves,” achieve “excellence,” and live “a good life?” Course assignments are designed to also enhance students’ ability to demonstrate their own learning and thought at a university level – in seminar discussions, creative projects, and writing assignments, as well as exams. Open to all thoughtfully curious Honors students from entering Freshmen to final semester Seniors. No previous study of Classical cultures, Greek or Roman, required. This class is excellent preparation for future Honors study-abroad experience in Greece, Rome, and beyond.
