gh 301 - Greek and Latin Roots of the English Language

SPRING 2013 - CRN: 13940

Etymology is the study and application of the derivation of English words and word families from their roots in ancient and modern languages.  This course analyzes meanings of English words by examining roots, prefixes, and suffixes.  The connotative and denotative meanings of words in a variety of contexts and the reasons for language change are analyzed.  Medicine, law, and other disciplines with a specific vocabulary and word usage are studied as well.

A project, such as doing a case study on specific words or creating a historical time line of the development of specific words or terms, is required to demonstrate knowledge, application, and progress in etymology course content.
