GH301K: Mythos and logos

Spring 2010

The readings focus on key works of Sophocles, Ibsen, and Camus that pertain to the theme of the Fall of Man, the WOMEN OF TRACHIS, THE MASTER BUILDER, and THE FALL. As other works by these authors are read and discussed a more coherent understanding of the overall importance of these literary masterpieces will emerge. In effect, these three provide the MYTHOS of the course; the authors' other works will be examined to ascertain their potential as suitable LOGOS, or critique.

Books to be ordered:

Note: All of these editions are widely available (and inexpensive!)

All readings will be discussed in class, and as the semester progresses individual class members will give short reports, seminar style, with discussion following each of these presentations. The course will conclude with a paper whose topic will have arisen from these efforts.
