gh 301M: Masculinity in Literature

Summer II 2012

Course Description

"GH 301 “Masculinity in Literature and Film: is a course that is designed to introduce students to a variety of literatures and provoke discussion relevant to society in our lifetime. There are more “literatures” than just the written word, so  this course has been designed to show the simultaneous dialogue that occurs between writing and film—both of which have writing at the root of their respective art forms.

This course is an attempt to show students a perspective not normally represented in standard literature courses. We will be watching popular contemporary movies and reading popular contemporary books. Since this is a course devoted to dissecting masculinity, as well as its pros and cons, some of the texts will be blunt in nature. We will watch, listen, and read with open minds, in an attempt to see how all of these “texts” interact with one another and mirror each other’s messages.

By the end of the course, students will be able to maintain in-depth discussion on the nature of masculinity, its traits, its problems, and its necessity. We will approach the definition of masculinity from a variety of angles—some expected, and some unexpected. Students will take away from this class a deeper understanding of all facets of our culture (both its masculine and its feminine aspects), as well as the expectations we place upon ourselves as men and women living in America."
