MAJORS: Science Education (Biology/Chemistry), Biology HOMETOWN: West Terre Haute, IN EMAIL: kellingswor@sycamores.indstate.edu
What are your career goals, and why? I plan to become a high school science teacher! I’ve been asked so many times why I’m interested in being a teacher, and my answer is always the same – I love both of my content areas, I love working with students! More than that, though, I love giving those students the opportunity to become more confident in their abilities, and believe that they can achieve any goal they set if they work hard enough. What hobbies or interests do you have? Reading! I love to read!! I also love to shop, spend time with my family and friends, and bake (especially cupcakes)! |

What other leadership roles do you have and/or what else are you involved with on campus or in the local community?
Last year I served as the Chair of the Honors Council, and it was a blast! I’ve also been involved as a supplemental instructor and a teaching assistant in chemistry department, and I’m a member of the 2012-2013 Honors Council. I work at the ISU Foundation, and am a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and NSCS.
What was your favorite Honors class so far, and why?
My favorite Honors class was GH 101 with Dr. Yousif. She is such an awesome teacher, and a wonderful person. I learned more from her than I ever could have imagined, and she helped prepare me for the challenging road ahead. GH 101 was the perfect way to acclimate myself to the college experience, and Dr. Yousif opened up discussions that made me think more deeply about the word.
What do you like most about being an Honors student?
My favorite thing about being an Honors student is the great number of opportunities that are opened up to you as a member of this program. Converting classes to Honors credit is such a great way to work one-on-one with ISU faculty, and to dig deeper into your content area. So many doors are open to Honors students, and it only takes a little motivation to take advantage of all of them!
What advice do you have for first-year Honors students about easing the transition from home to ISU?
Just have fun! My favorite quote right now is “Don’t sweat the petty stuff, and don’t pet the sweaty stuff!” As long as you enjoy yourself, stay organized, and get involved, college will be an awesome and memorable time.
What advice do you have for first-year Honors students about time management?
The best advice I have for staying organized is to get a great big calendar, and update it frequently. Time management is different for every person, and it just takes some organization and a little bit of trial and error to find out what works best for you.
What advice do you have for first-year Honors students about dealing with stress?
Like I just said, just have fun! The Honors program is a more difficult path to take, but it is so rewarding in the end. Being stressed out comes hand in hand with the choice to become an Honors student, but you shouldn’t let it become overwhelming. Stay focused, but remember to relax sometimes, and it will all work out in the end!
What other general advice do you have for first-year Honors students?
Get involved!! No matter what your interests may be, ISU has some kind of group or activity to fit you. Find that niche, and get involved!
