What other leadership roles do you have and/or what else are you involved with on campus or in the local community?
I am involved in the Honors Council, Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Fraternity, Creative Writers Society, and Linking Language Learners. I also work as a Features Reporter for the Indiana Statesman, and as a Consultant at the ISU Writing Center.
What was your favorite Honors class so far, and why?
I really liked my GH301 class, Greek and Latin Roots of the English Language with Dr. Shorter. As a writer, I love words, so it was really interesting for me to see how certain words we use on a daily basis have come from Greek and Latin, and how they translate almost literally. I actually learned some Greek and Latin words and phrases from that class, and I also expanded my vocabulary tremendously.
What do you like most about being an Honors student?
I like having special opportunities and privileges, like being able to register for classes early. I also like being able to interact with the Honors Faculty. Even if I’m not taking an Honors class with one of those professors, I always seem to get more out of their classes than I do my others.
What advice do you have for first-year Honors students about easing the transition from home to ISU?
Become involved! ISU has SO much to offer, so get out there and try to find your niche on campus! You’ll meet new friends, appreciate campus more, and be less likely to get homesick or lonely. Plus, being involved on campus is really rewarding in the sense that you feel like you’re contributing to something bigger than yourself.
What advice do you have for first-year Honors students about time management?
Manage your time wisely! If you know you’re going to have a busy week, don’t procrastinate! Get things done so you don’t have to cram everything into one or two nights before it’s all due. If you get everything done early, you can go have fun and relax instead of being worried about school stuff all the time.
What advice do you have for first-year Honors students about dealing with stress?
Don’t run yourself into the ground. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take some time for yourself and find a way to relax. Spend time with your friends, go work out at the Rec, or just sit and read or listen to music. You may feel like you’re being unproductive or lazy, but if you don’t take that time for yourself, you’ll become super stressed and overwhelmed with everything.
What other general advice do you have for first-year Honors students?
Don’t be afraid to speak up. Whether it’s about something school-related, or something personal, there are so many resources on campus for you to get the help you need or to answer any questions you might have. You just have to ask!
