co-curricular activities in the honors learning communities

On November 1, 2008, students from the GEOG 111H and PSCI 107H Learning Communities spent the day investigating spatial and temporal graves within the Woodlawn and St. Joseph cemeteries in Terre Haute. Students collected data on gender and age of deceased, month and year of death, style of grave marker using a classification rubric, inferred ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and degree of erosion of tombstones. This data, and the questions that resulted from it, could be used to stimulate further discussion in both classes.

After the cemetery, the group went to dinner at a local restaurant and viewed a community theater production of "Dracula." These co-curricular activities helped the students bond with each other, with their instructors, and with their Learning Community Peer Assistants, as well as engage in experiential learning about data-gathering that they could apply to both classes.
