2012 Human Rights Day

Mayoral Proclamation

Mayor Duke BennettWHEREAS: promotion of understanding and recognition of the inherent dignity and inalienable rights of all members of the human family are worthy ideals; and

WHEREAS: preservation and achievement of these ideals serves as the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace; and

WHEREAS: achieving social justice and human rights requires “An Adequate Standard of Living for All”; and   

WHEREAS: everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control; and

WHEREAS: motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance, and all children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection; and 

WHEREAS: the 2012 theme is “The Right to Housing”.

NOW, THEREFORE: I, Duke A. Bennett, Mayor of the City of Terre Haute, do hereby proclaim April 10, 2012 as

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

in Terre Haute Indiana and I call upon all members of the community to participate in those activities.
