B.S. in Mechanical
Engineering Technology
Indiana State University’s Bachelor of Science degree in
Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) prepares individuals for
technical and technical management positions in industries, such as
engineers, technical managers and technologists.
The
program focuses on engineering design, especially, mechanical design
and management of the design processes. Throughout the program’s
curriculum, emphasis is placed on computer-aided design (CAD) and
its integration with other computer aided engineering (CAE) tools or
technologies (e.g. computer-aided manufacturing, rapid prototyping).
Students develop hands-on experience and technical problem-solving
skill with state-of-the-art CAD/CAE technologies. While the students
focus on the design of mechanical products and systems, they also
study management aspect of engineering design, and be prepared to
manage people, resources, and systems related to design and
manufacturing. The program faculty has experience in both teaching
and applied research in the subject area, and industry work
experience that contributes to the quality of a laboratory based
instruction.

ISU’s mechanical engineering technology
program is characterized by:
-
Mathematics and scientific principles applied in a hands-on
environment to solve technical design problems.
-
Theory
and application of CAD, such as solid modeling, assembly models,
design analysis, dimensioning and tolerance, mechanisms and
simulation.
-
Opportunities
to get involved in the applied research projects, conducted by the
MET faculty in collaboration with industries.
-
Credits
available via transfer of course work, testing out of courses and
working experiences.
-
Articulation with specified programs from other
institutions.
-
Opportunities to fulfill course requirement via different
modes of teaching and learning, including videotape and
Internet.
CAREER INFORMATION
MET
program aims to prepare technical professionals with hands-on
problem solving skill for industries. In addition to the knowledge
and skill in mechanical design, our students will also be trained to
be excellent at communicating and coordinating technical information
among customers, vendors, operators, engineering staff and top
management. As a MET student at the ISU, you will learn to solve
technical problems in a variety of group, laboratory, and industrial
settings. As a graduate of our program, you can apply your skills
and abilities in such positions as:
-
Mechanical engineer
-
Product
design engineer
-
Production engineer
-
Project
engineer
-
Manufacturing engineer
-
Quality
engineer
With experience you
may advance to following management positions:
-
Team leader
-
Head designer
-
Supervisor
-
Project manager
-
Technical manager
-
Plant manager
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
EXPERIENCE
As a
MET student you may apply for admission to the professional practice
programs (Co-op) that includes a cooperative work experience. To be
admitted to this program you must have completed, with acceptable
academic achievement, your freshman year of study. The professional
Practice Program allows you to:
-
Receive
credit while employed in a position related to your major.
-
Earn a
portion of your college expenses while employed in industry for a
summer or semester.
-
Learn
about a company while developing professional abilities and
earning University credit.
-
Choose
a professional practice experience that meets your career goals
from positions located through out the United States.
PROFESSIONAL
ORGANIZATIONS
Number of
national professional organizations sponsor student chapters on the
ISU campus. As a MET major you may choose to join one or more of
these groups to learn about your field and to make professional
contacts. ISU students frequently attend those organizations
national conventions and meetings. Professional organizations
offered at ISU include:
-
American Society of Mechanical
Engineers
-
Society of Manufacturing
Engineers
-
Society of Automotive
Engineers
-
National Association of
Industrial Technology
-
Institute of Packaging
Professionals
-
Computer and Automated Systems
Association of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
-
Robotics International Society of
the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
-
Epsilon Pi Tau, the International
Honorary for Professions in Technology
FINANCIAL INFORMATION
The
MET program at Indiana State is a quality program offered at
competitive overall costs. Student fees are assessed on a bracketed
structure that offers you cost savings on enrollment. A variety of
federal, state, and University financial aid programs are available.
Special scholarship dedicated to the program is also
available.
