Contemporary Women Artists Exhibitions at ISU Jan.19 - Feb.11
Terre Haute, IN - The University Art Gallery at Indiana State University is pleased to present "Contemporary Women Artists: New York" and "Contemporary Women Artists: Indiana" from Jan. 19 Feb. 11. These exhibitions will be just two of many events focusing on women in the arts taking place throughout the greater Terre Haute area during January and February. The public is invited to view the work at the artistsı receptions on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 4 - 7 p.m. Refreshments and hors dıoeurves will be served. There will also be several events held in conjunction with the exhibitions which will be free and open to the public.
The first event will be a lecture by noted author and curator Judy Collischan, Ph.D. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 26 from noon - 12:50 p.m. at Terre Hauteıs Swope Art Museum, located at 25 South Seventh Street. Collischan will present a lecture entitled "Contemporary Artists - Women and Men" as part of the Swope Art Museum's Brown Bag Lecture Series. During this slide lecture, she will present, contrast and compare work by women and men who are currently either working in or showing in New York City and focus on two central points: the variety inherent in the concept of art - a variety enhanced and infused by diversity; and the success of an individual's art dependent on his or her relation of personal experience and knowledge.
A Contemporary Women Artists panel discussion will take place at ISU Thursday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall in the Center for Performing and Fine Arts. The panel will include guest curators Judy Collischan and Betsy Stirrat, as well as two artists from the exhibitions, Lauren Ewing and Emily Kennerk. Collischan, the guest curator of the "Contemporary Women Artists: New York" exhibition, has previously served as the Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Neuberger Museum and as Director of the Hillwood Art Museum. She has curated numerous exhibitions and is author of a number of essays and such books as "Welded! Sculpture of the Twentieth Century," "Lines of Vision: Drawings by Contemporary Women," and "Women Shaping Art: Profiles of Power." Stirrat, the curator of "Contemporary Women Artists: Indiana," is an artist and curator from Indiana and is Director of the School of Fine Arts Gallery at Indiana University. Ewing is a graduate of Indiana State University who has enjoyed success as an artist and teacher in New York City. Kennerk is a noted emerging artist from Indianapolis.
The final event will be a Womenıs Studies panel discussion that will take place Friday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. in the Music Recital Hall in the Center for Performing and Fine Arts. This panel will be made up of artists and curators, as well as members from the ISU Womenıs Studies program and will focus on topical issues related to Womenıs Studies.
"Contemporary Women Artists: New York," organized by Collischan, will be presented from Jan. 19 - Feb. 11. The exhibition will focus on contemporary woman artists from New York and will feature a variety of works, including the work of such artists as Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Mary Frank, Ida Applebroog, Janet Fish, Lynda Benglis, Chakaia Booker, and Ewing.
"Contemporary Women Artists: New York" will be presented in the University Art Gallery, located in the Center for Performing and Fine Arts at the corner of North Seventh and Chestnut Streets. The University Art Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
A sister show entitled "Contemporary Women Artists: Indiana" will take place from Jan. 19 - Feb. 11, in the Turman Art Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Building on Chestnut Street. Organized by Stirrat, this exhibition will focus on contemporary woman artists from Indiana and will feature a variety of works by young, emerging talent. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 1 - 4 p.m. or by appointment.
