BLUMBERG CENTER'S GOEHL AWARDED FOR SERVICE

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana Chapter of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) recently honored Karen Goehl of Indiana State University's Blumberg Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Special Education during its conference in Indianapolis.

Karen Goehl Goehl, who has served as project director for the Indiana DeafBlind Services Project since 1988, received the 2004 IN AER Award as an outstanding educational professional serving persons with visual impairments.

During her career, she has served others, particularly those with disabilities, in a variety of capacities. Some of those roles have included serving as a social worker for the Tri-County Headstart Program in St. Cloud, Minn., as a social worker for the Comprehensive Services Agency in Greencastle, as a home programming specialist for Indiana University Developmental Training Center, or as an educational consultant for the multiply handicapped with the Indiana State Board of Health. Most recently, she has served as director of the Blumberg Center's Connections Project (includes Project Vision) and DeafBlind initiative.

Her recent activities have included serving as a member of the Project SALUTE (Successful Adaptations for Learning to Use Touch Effectively) federal grant advisory committee, co-chair of the Usher Syndrome Task Force Committee, a task force member for the Governor's Conference on Early Childhood, a planning committee member for the Indiana Statewide Transition Conference and a member of the National Technical Assistance Consortium for Children and Youths who are Deaf-Blind (NTAC), among other activities.

Editor of the Deafblind Focus, the Indiana Deaf-Blind Services Newsletter, since 1992, Goehl also serves as consulting editor of Deaf-Blind Perspectives (since 1993).
