Nominees announced for Hoosier Boys State

Milan, Nashville boys nominated for governor

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Daniel Fleming of Milan and Matt Schrimper of Nashville were "nominated" today (Tuesday) to represent their parties in Wednesday's general election at Hoosier Boys State, taking place this week on the campus of Indiana State University.

More than 630 boys are in attendance at Hoosier Boys State, a week-long event which provides hands-on experience in the operation of American government and education in political party organization.

During the week, boys are assigned to either the Nationalist or Federalist political party and take part in the creation of a mythical "51st" state, Hoosier Boys State. Through this exercise, the delegates learn about the various facets of the political system, such as selecting a precinct committeeman, drawing up a platform, adopting caucus rules and selecting nominees and voting for the Governor of Hoosier Boys State.

Schrimper, the son of Wendy Schrimper of Nashville and a senior-to-be at Brown County High School, ran and won in a field of 10 gubernatorial candidates in the Federalist Party, while Fleming, the son of Jeff and Patricia Fleming of Milan, won in a field of 17 Nationalist Party candidates.

In the lieutenant governor's race, Joseph Bizjak of Kokomo will represent the Nationalist Party while Sam Roosz of West Lafayette will represent the Federalist Party. Nominees for other offices include: for Secretary of State, Nathaniel Hampton of Dillsboro (Nat.) and Scott Vitter of West Lafayette (Fed.); Attorney General, Rhett Buwalda of Lafayette (Nat.) and Keandre Howard of Indianapolis; Treasurer, Ryan Shean of Newcastle (Nat.) and Aaron Walker of Muncie (Fed.); Auditor, Billy Crosby of Merrillville (Nat.) and Ben Frost of Greenfield (Fed.); Superintendent of Public Education, Anthony Tryonis of Knox (Nat.) and Angelo Underly of New Carlisle (Fed.); and Clerk, Garrett Dickerson of Indianapolis (Nat.) and Blake Kenny of Indianapolis (Fed.).

Among the political-themed events in which the boys will participate as gubernatorial candidate are a political rallies, candidate debates and general election. The general election will take place Wednesday morning with the inauguration to take place Wednesday evening.

This marks the 35th year that Indiana State University has hosted Hoosier Boys State. More than 60,000 young men throughout the state of Indiana have participated in the HBS school of government and practical politics since 1937.

The new HBS governor and outstanding citizen will also represent Indiana July 23-31 at Boys Nation in Arlington, Va., where delegates will study the operations of the federal government.
