Indiana State University Honors Four with G.O.L.D. Awards

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State University Alumni Association has announced the recipients of the G.O.L.D. (Graduate of the Last Decade) Awards. The G.O.L.D. Award was created as a means of recognizing the achievements of recent alumni. The 2005 recipients will be honored at a reception and banquet on Friday, Nov. 4, in Dede III in Hulman Memorial Student Union. The 2005 G.O.L.D. Award recipients are:

Scot E. Elkins

Scot E. Elkins Scot Elkins, who received an Associate of Science in manufacturing supervision in 1996 and a Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing technology in 2000, was recently appointed Director of Technology for Champ Car World Series in Evansville, Ind., in 2005.

Elkins accepted a position with Barber Dodge Pro Series in Lakeville, Conn., after completing his Associate of Science degree at Indiana State, and after completing his Bachelor of Science, became an engineering team manager for Robert Yates Racing in Mooresville, N.C. Over the years, Elkins has held positions with notable Indiana companies such as Toyota Motor Manufacturing, PI Research, Inc. and RM/CONTI Racing.

A member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Elkins became involved in hands-on education relating to his field soon after beginning a professional career of his own. He served as a volunteer classroom consultant for Junior Achievement of the Wabash Valley and currently serves in the same position for Junior Achievement of Gibson County.

While at ISU on an academic scholarship, Elkins served as vice president of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He remains active at ISU as the chairman of the Automotive Technology Advisory Committee through the College of Technology and as a charter life member of the ISU Alumni Association.

Elkins currently resides in Evansville, Ind.

Mary Anne Nolan Hanner

Mary Anne Nolan Hanner Mary Anne Hanner received her Ph.D. in educational administration from ISU in 1994. She then accepted the position of acting associate dean of the College of Sciences at Eastern Illinois University, where she had previously completed her Bachelor of Science and her Master of Science in speech pathology.

After completion of her undergraduate education, Hanner accepted a speech-language pathologist position with Illinois Public Schools. She has been on the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences faculty at Eastern Illinois since 1981 and served as director of EIU's Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. Hanner now serves as the dean of the College of Sciences at Eastern Illinois University.

Hanner was the recipient of the Edgar Morphet Research Scholarship from Indiana State University and later received the Fred A. and Joyce E. Snyder Award for Outstanding Dissertation in 1995. She received the Faculty Excellence Award for Service from Eastern Illinois and the Woman of Achievement Award from the Women's Studies Council of EIU in 1996. In 2000, she was awarded the Graduate Student Mentor Award at Eastern Illinois University.

Perhaps one of the most significant contributions to education, though, is her part in the development in 1985 of the Language Processing Test, which diagnosed language-processing disorders. Ten years later, the modified Language Processing Kit continues to be a popular assessment product used by speech-language pathologists and other personnel who work with the language learning-disabled.

Aside from her educational contributions, Hanner remains active in her community. She has been an appointed member of the Coles County Sheriff's Merit Commission since 1998, a member of the Coles County Historical Society since 1995 and an active member of St. John Baptist Catholic Church in Arcola, Ill., since 1976. Hanner has also been active with the Oakland Community Unit School District #5 Board and currently resides in Oakland, Ill.

Jennifer M. Petersen

Jennifer M. Petersen Jennifer Petersen's strong advocacy for professional development earned her the 2002 North Central Business Education Association Distinguished Service Award as Emerging Professional of the Year. Petersen, a current business teacher and head girl's cross-country coach at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, Ind., received a Bachelor of Science in business education and a minor in information processing at Indiana State University in 1998.

After graduation, Petersen accepted a position at Chesterton High School in Chesterton, Ind., as a business teacher. That same year she was the recipient of the National Business Education Association Award of Merit. As an assistant coach, Petersen guided the Chesterton girl's cross-country team to many top-ten state finishes.

In 2002, she accepted her current position at Ben Davis High School and began implementing a progressive teaching method called Differentiation Cadre in her classroom. Differentiation Cadre recognizes the ineffectiveness of "one-size-fits-all" teaching and encourages attendance to each student's unique learning style.

Petersen has been a member of Business Professionals of America since 2002 and Pi Omega Pi, an honorary organization for business education majors, since 1995. She has been a member of the National Business Education Association since 1998, and has held various positions such as vice president and president of the Indiana Business Education Association.

Petersen returned to Indiana State in 2002 during the Annual Business Education Clinic as a personal finance roundtable presenter and was a part of ISU's Networks K-12 Financial Literary Task Force in 2003. She currently resides in Indianapolis.

Keith T. Richards

Keith T. Richards After attending ISU on football and academic scholarships, Keith Richards graduated cum laude in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in business administration and in quality and decision systems (now operations management and analysis) and a minor in management information systems.

Richards is the current global program manager at Crown Equipment Corporation in Celina, Ohio, where he is currently directing a multi-million dollar project.

Since the beginning of his career with Crown Equipment Corporation, Richards has developed and led key initiatives that have improved market share, improved quality and increased profitability.
