Media Advisory: Michael Simmons Student Activity Center Dedication Oct. 21
Who: Indiana State University
What: Dedication of the Michael Simmons Student Activity Center
When: Friday, Oct. 21
In case of inclement weather and a rain-out of the Trike race, the dedication will be at 4:50 p.m. inside the Center.
If the trike race takes place, the dedication is slated to begin at 5:10 p.m.
Where: Recreation East, located north of the College of Business and College of Education on Ninth Street
In the late 1990s, Michael Simmons wanted to recognize the efforts of the students who maintained and participated in the Sycamore Tricycle Derby. Simmons, a 1964 graduate of ISU, was one of the founders of the race as a student in 1963 along with Debbie Hulman Bareford and Tom Bareford.
Because of the effort and support of Simmons, the Barefords, and former riders and coordinators of both trike and tandem, Recreation East is now equipped with amenities such as lights, sound, a scoreboard, and seating.
The Michael Simmons Student Activity Center houses the Susan M. Bareford Memorial Classroom, commemorative displays chronicling the history and the participants of trike and tandem, storage for the trikes, restrooms, bleachers, and a covered observation deck.
