Media Advisory: 10th Annual Tech T.R.E.K. at ISU Wednesday, Nov. 1

What: Tech T.R.E.K. (Technology, Resources, Education, Knowledge). The event is open to all high schools, with 21 schools registered for this year's event.

Who: Nearly 400 high school students from Indiana and Illinois

When: From 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 1). See schedule of events below.

Where: Tilson Auditorium, Tirey Hall on the Indiana State University campus

Why: To promote problem solving, teamwork, communication, curriculum integration and technological literacy; To provide ISU technology education students with opportunity to "practice" developing activities that address technology education curriculum in a contextual format and working with high school students; To provide high school students with an opportunity to apply skills and knowledge from a variety of subject areas and to work as a team in a competitive environment.

9 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Tilson Auditorium

COMPETITIVE EVENTS
9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. - College of Technology Labs
Materials and supplies provided.

TECHNOLOGY BOWL PLAY-OFF
12:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. - Tilson Auditorium

AWARDS
1- 1:30 p.m. - Tilson Auditorium

First-place school trophies will be awarded to winning teams from each event. Certificates will be awarded to students on teams placing 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd- in each event.

Participating schools: Among the schools participating are Brown County High School, Clay City High School, Columbus East High School, Kankakee Valley High School, Marshall (IL) High School, Martinsville (IL) High School, New Palestine High School, North Vermillion High School, Perry Meridian High School, Rockville High School, South Decatur High School, South Knox High School, South Vermillion High School, Sullivan High School, Terre Haute South, Triton Central High School and Western Boone High School

Point of interest: ISU's new Technology Education instructor, Kyle Lanoue, was a Technology Career Advocate when he was a student at ISU. Kyle helped plan and implement the first Tech TREK back in 1996. As a high school teacher, Kyle brought teams of students to the event every year. He is now the advisor for the Technology Education Club students who are working as developers and facilitators for this year's competitive events.

Bug-Eyed Builder TA 124 Solve and document a construction-related problem.
Communication Revelation TA 204E Utilize technical communication and teambuilding skills to accomplish a task.
Crash Test Dummies TC 312 Create an apparatus that will withstand an impact without breaking a fragile object contained inside.
Duct Tape Fanatic TA 225 A series of tasks are developed and performed to accomplish a multi-phased technological task.
Freeform Farm Frenzy TA 225 Lab Design a farm and create a model based on the parameters provided.
I, Robot TC108 After brief instruction on robotics, teams will develop a simple program to solve a problem using a robotic arm.
Junk Yard Genius TA 224 Utilizing nothing but trash and junk, teams will construct an object that will meet certain requirements and perform a task of destruction.
Mechanical Design Mania TC 217 Create a blueprint of a bridge by using CAD or neatly drawing on graph paper, provide a brief description on how the bridge works, then build a bridge which will hold the largest load.
Out of this World TC 105 Design and prototype a spacecraft to land on another planet.
Production Pandemonium TC 317 Design and develop a potential manufactured product. Sketches and prototype are to be made.
Rescue Mission TC 021 Rescue a downed pilot and get him to a medical facility in a timely, safe manner. Good teamwork examples during middle of event session.
Solution Revolution TC 304 Plan and fabricate a technological apparatus to accomplish an assigned manipulation.
Web Wise TC 305 Develop a home page based on specific parameters using software of your team's choice, including Front Page, Netscape Composer, or MS Word.
Wrap It Up TC 113 Plan, develop, illustrate, and fabricate a package for a specified product.
