Become A Certified nonprofit professional (CNP) at Indiana State University

Nonprofit organizations play a vital role in the development of our society. To fulfill their missions, these organizations need dedicated, trained professionals with the desire and ability to make a difference in their community and in the lives of others.

A career in the nonprofit sector rewards not only you, but also your community. As a nonprofit professional, you will reap emotional and financial rewards while making a difference in society.

Each year our nation's nonprofits need 50,000 entry-level professionals to fill staff vacancies.  Unfortunately, an adequate pool of diverse, competent candidates does not yet exist.  How would you like to have an edge on the job market? A little something extra to put you over the top? The answer is quite simple...become a Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) through ISU’s Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Certification Program!

The award-winning certification program at Indiana State University is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students from a variety of disciplines for meaningful careers in the management of nonprofit agencies.  Students who enroll in the program work toward CNP certification from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance by meeting a variety of curricular and co-curricular requirements.  The curriculum is based on a validated-competency set as determined by 1000’s of nonprofit executives across the United States.

The 10 core nonprofit leadership competencies are:

Students who enroll in the program work toward certification by completing four main requirements:

  1. Coursework (ranges from 4 to 21 credit hours based on major/minors/honors)
  2. Participate in the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association
  3. Attend National NLA Management/Leadership Institute (AMI)
  4. Complete 300-contact hour Nonprofit Sector internship

Upon completion of the certification program, students receive the national Certified Nonprofit Professional certification from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance.  At Indiana State University, on the way to CNP certification, students may also earn the Association of Fundraising Professionals Collegiate Chapter Certificate in Fundraising, the E-Tapestry Donor Management System Master User Certification, and the Indiana YouthPRO Association's Indiana Youth Development Credential (IYD)!  Students may also make significant progress towards becoming a Certified Volunteer Administrator (CVA).
