The Latin American/Latino Studies Minor

 

The Minor consists of 21 hours of Latin American and Latino studies content courses designed to complement a major in a wide range of disciplines, including economics, political science, social studies education, history, Spanish, geography, and anthropology.  Students will discover that this minor provides unique preparation for careers in education, research, government, journalism, or business that demand more awareness and knowledge about our increasingly multicultural society and interdependent world.

Core Courses (9 Semester Hours):

LA 300 (HIST 345)—Introduction to Latin American and Latino Studies
(3 hours)

Six hours from Track A (Politics and Society):

  • Anthropology 306
  • History 444, 446, 448
  • Political Science 483, 474
  • Economics 442

      OR

Six hours from Track B (Arts and Culture):

  • Anthropology 301
  • Spanish 311, 410, 415, 427

Required Courses (6 Semester Hours):

        A minimum of six additional hours from either Track A or Track B.

Elective Courses (6 Semester Hours):

        Students must complete six hours from cognate courses approved by the program advisor.  Students may take up to six hours in independent study towards the minor with the consent of the program advisor for courses listed in the tracks.  The following departments currently offer independent study courses in the minor: art, economics, foreign languages, history, political science.

Study Abroad:

        Students may complete six hours of the minor (except LA 300) through approved study abroad programs in Spain, Mexico, or Costa Rica.  For more information about study abroad opportunities in Latin America, please visit International Affairs Center.
