Language Studies Major (31 semester hours)

Required LLL courses (7 hours): 
LLL 200 "Introduction to Language and Culture for Students of LLL" --3 hrs.;
LLL 400 "Senior Seminar" or 402 "Teaching an Integrated Unit"--1 hr.;
a second language or linguistics area course--3 hrs. minimum. (for example, Spanish 101, Arabic 101, etc.)

Required language courses (18 hours): 300/400-level course work from within the department.  For example, if you are interested in TESL, you could choose from among the following:
LING 311 "Linguistic Analysis of English"; LING 316 "Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language"; LING 411 "Diachronic Analysis of English"; LING 413 "Linguistic Diversity in the U.S."; LING 414 "Lexicology: Word Form and Function"; LING 415 "Topics in Sociolinguistics: World Englishes"; LING 417 "Language Differences and Linguistic Universals"; LING 420 "Language Acquisition"

Electives (6 hours): course work from within the Department or approved cognate course work in English from another Department.*  For example, you could take LING 210 "Introduction to Linguistics" or more of the above TESL/Linguistics courses, Japanese (or another language) 101 and 102,  upper-level courses in a language, or study-abroad courses.

*Up to two 100-level courses may be counted if in a second or third language or linguistic area.  Cognate and culture courses in English may be counted only if the student has completed the equivalent of a 100-level course in the same language or linguistic area.

An applied experience component within the 31 hours.  May consist of:
·        
minimum 6 credit hours of appropriate study abroad  OR
·        
a minimum of 3 semester hours in LLL 409 in an approved internship

The applied experience requirement may be waived for second majors.

 

Language Studies Minor (18 hrs.)

Required courses:

  •  LLL 200 "Introduction to Language and Culture for Students of LLL" --3 hrs.;

  •  A second language or linguistics area course--3 hrs. minimum. (For example, Spanish 101, Arabic 101, etc.)

  •  12 Hours from within the Department to include at least 6 semester hours at the 300/400 level.   For example, if you are interested in Linguistics or TESL, you could choose from among the following:
    LING 210 "Introduction to Linguistics"; LING 311 "Linguistic Analysis of English"; LING 316 "Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language"; LING 411 "Diachronic Analysis of English"; LING 413 "Linguistic Diversity in the U.S."; LING 414 "Lexicology: Word Form and Function"; LING 415 "Topics in Sociolinguistics: World Englishes"; LING 417 "Language Differences and Linguistic Universals"; LING 420 "Language Acquisition"

 A minimum of 2.5 GPA in all course work is required for the minor.  Up to 3 semester  hours of 100-level study in the second area may be counted toward the minor (e.g., Spanish 102, Arabic 102, etc.).

Language Studies--Teaching Major (31 semester hours) with a Concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language

This major also requires completion of the Professional Education Sequence for licensure if you want to teach in Indiana public schools.

Required LLL courses (7 hours minimum):
LLL 200 "Introduction to Language and Culture for Students of LLL" --3 hrs.;
LLL 402 "Teaching an Integrated Unit"--1 hr.;
LING 420 "Language Acquisition" -3 hrs.

Required TESL concentration courses (24 hours):
201--3 hrs. in a single language other than English
LING 210 "Introduction to Linguistics"--3 hrs.
LING 311 "Linguistic Analysis of English"--3 hrs.,
LING 413 "Linguistic Diversity in the U.S." or LING 415 "Topics in Sociolinguistics: World Englishes"--3 hrs.,
LING 414 "Lexicology: Word Form and Function" or LING 417 "Language Differences and Linguistic Universals"--3 hrs.
9 additional hours at the 300/400 level:
Courses available within the department and not listed above include:  LING 316 "Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language" (Required in the Professional Education Sequence), LING 411 "Diachronic Analysis of English", and LLL 490 "Language Teaching Methods".  The 6 hours of study abroad courses could also be counted toward this requirement.  In addition, up to 6 hours of cognate courses (yet to be specified) may be taken from outside the department. 

An applied experience within the 31 hours:  Must consist of at least 6 hours of 300/400-level course work taken in study abroad.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A TEACHING LICENSE OR ARE WORKING ON ONE THROUGH THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, YOU CAN ADD OUR

Minor in English as a New Language  (15 hrs) 

This minor may be added to another teacher education major program.  It does not fulfill requirements for the LLL major. However, it does meet requirements for licensure in combination with an approved teacher education major program.

Required courses: Linguistics 210--3 hrs.; 311--3 hrs.; 413 or 415--3 hrs.; 420--3 hrs.; 316 or LLL 490--3 hrs.

Certificate in TESL/TEFL

The TESL/TEFL certificate offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics

  • is a 12-hour program that prepares students to understand the learning and teaching of English as a second or foreign language
  • may be pursued concurrently with any undergraduate or graduate major
  • especially appropriate for students who want to teach ESL/EFL abroad

For GRADUATE CERTIFICATE:

Course Requirements:

LING 601: English Syntax - 3 hrs.
LING 520: Language Acquisition - 3 hrs.
LING 613: Teaching English as a Second Language - 3 hrs.
One Elective chosen from LING 513, LING 514, LING 515, LING 517, LING 621, and LING 792 - 3 hrs.

The Certificate can be earned during another graduate program by taking one of the courses each semester for 2 years, or it can be completed in 1 year by taking two courses each semester.

Applied Experience Requirement

This requirement is fulfilled by doing one of the following:

  1. 2 years study (or equivalent fluency) of a language that is not the student's native language
  2. Experience living in a culture that is not the student's native culture (3 months minimum)
  3. ESL/EFL teaching or cross-cultural experience (3 months minimum)

The Faculty & Students

The Department has nine full-time faculty members who have all lived in cultures other than their own; most have studied and/or taught in other countries.  Three of these faculty members are devoted to teaching Linguistics/TESL.  In addition, we have a diverse group of graduate students, currently from nine countries on four continents.
