Video of Stephanie Shaw on her Study Abroad Experience in Argentina
Study Abroad is one of the most important and exciting parts of any
academic program in languages. The Department of Languages,
Literatures and Linguistics works closely with the
Study Abroad Office (Stalker Hall, Room 122) to bring quality
study abroad opportunities to ISU students. SPANISH: Participate in Dr. Montañez's Study Abroad Program to Mexico, Summer 2009. TESL/TEFL: TESOL Teaching Practicum in Morelia, Mexico; Fall, Winter, and Spring. From their website: "The TESOL practicum offers students a hands-on teaching experience in both high school and university environments. Students are placed in Mexican classrooms and work with mentoring teachers to develop comprehensive lesson plans that are implemented in-class and evaluated by a practicum supervisor. Students will also be expected to participate in peer observations throughout the program. Previous TESOL coursework is required." Link to full list of TESL/TEFL sites. OTHER: It is also possible to study abroad in countries where Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, or Thai are spoken. Semester Abroad Programs with MCSA/AHAVienna, Austria Macerata, Italy Segovia, Spain Morelia, MexicoThese programs offer a single semester abroad. Students are housed with families and receive close individual attention. The Vienna and Macerata programs are of particular interest to students who are not majoring in the Department. They offer language courses from beginning to intermediate, and courses in English in the humanities and business. Students can reasonably transfer these courses for Liberal Studies credit. The program in Morelia, Mexico, also offers a TEFL practicum, allowing students to teach English in a Mexican school. Full Year Abroad Programs with ISEPISEP is an international exchange organization with sites throughout the world. Advanced students in the Department can take courses in their major or minor program at any number of world renowned universities. And the cost is quite appealing: students pay ISU tuition and room-and-board for the duration of their stay, plus travel expenses. See the Study Abroad office web site for program locations.
