Description:

The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in athletic training that provides the classroom knowledge and clinical experience needed to become a certified (and licensed) athletic trainer.

The emphasis of Indiana State University's undergraduate athletic training curriculum is to provide students with classroom knowledge and clinical experiences that are appropriate for the entry-level preparation of a certified athletic trainer.

Coursework in the department emphasizes strong theoretical foundations within each of the areas in athletic training, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills associated with obtaining clinical proficiency. Students also benefit from hands-on clinical education experiences with health care professionals.

Admissions:

An application process is necessary for the professional component of the major. Matriculating students typically apply during the spring semester of their freshman year. Transfer students are encouraged to apply when they have completed or are enrolled in prerequisite course equivalents. Transfer students must provide evidence of equivalent coursework (for example, course descriptions, syllabi, evidence of competency completion). Certified athletic trainers can be found almost anywhere people are physically active, including:

Accreditation:

The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

In addition, the Athletic Training Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Students have many sources of financial support for their studies, including financial aid, work-study programs, veterans' benefits, and special scholarships for entering freshmen and transfer students.

In addition, the Department of Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation offers several scholarships and awards.

  1. Ray Baggett Memorial Scholarship. The recipient shall have a major in athletic training at the junior level and will receive the scholarship at the beginning of his/her senior year. The recipient will be determined by the combined scores of all completed Clinical Instructor Evaluation Forms by April 15th each year. Only the top 5 scores all juniors will be eligible for consideration. Recipients shall be selected based on the criteria, need, and grade point average. The selection will be made by a scholarship committee consisting of one athletic training non-ISU faculty alumni, head athletic trainer (or the undergraduate program liaison), undergraduate program director, and two site supervisors (total of 5 individuals).
  2. Mel Blinkenstaff Athletic Training Scholarship. Established by Indiana State Athletic Training Alumni in honor of Z "Mel" Blinkenstaff, ISU's first athletic trainer, pioneer in athletic training education, NATA Hall of Fame member, and charter ISU Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee. This award is presented annually to a graduating senior athletic training student who has demonstrated outstanding character, proven leadership, and academic excellence. Only faculty may vote. All senior students are eligible for nomination. In the event of a tie, the department chair will make the final decision.
