The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in insurance and risk management.
The program provides students with the applied and theoretical knowledge needed for leadership roles. Upon completion, students possess the skills, risk management and insurance knowledge, ethics, technological competency, and confidence necessary to succeed in the insurance and financial services industry.
Course work includes a comprehensive base of liberal studies and business courses—plus an exceptionally broad range of challenging course work that focuses on all major aspects of insurance, risk management, and financial planning. All course work is first-tier among insurance and risk management programs nationwide, and serves as the foundation for professional designations and licenses.
The program's many partnerships with industry professionals, companies, and organizations provide a unique level of support for students, including:
- Paid internships with hands-on learning opportunities
- Mentor relationships with up-and-coming industry executives
- An aggressive pursuit of nationally competitive scholarship awards
- Opportunities to network with industry professionals at state, national, and international events
- Chances to be involved at national conferences and related industry meetings
- Personalized faculty advisement concerning their career aspirations and job search
Each year, our students win numerous national competitions, scholarships, and internships and have a variety of other enriching professional experiences available to them. Students have several opportunities for international study, including the Surplus Lines Insurance course, which typically involves travel to London over spring break. Some internships also include international travel and lead to career positions that include work in other countries or with professionals from other parts of the world.
As a freshman, students join Fresh Faces, which brings freshmen together to take a break from their busy college lives. Insurance and risk management majors and minors also participate in Gamma Iota Sigma, the international collegiate risk management, insurance, and actuarial science organization. The Insurance and Risk Management Honors Corps recognizes the academic achievements of the program's talented majors and minors who earn a 3.6 or higher overall grade point average.
Note: The Insurance and Risk Management Program is offered on the Terre Haute campus. The last two years are also offered via distance learning through the University's DegreeLink Program.

Currently, approximately 2.5 million Americans work in the trillion-dollar insurance industry, and in Indiana, insurance is among the top two industries, both in number of employees and in wages earned.
Few industries can match the diversity of career opportunities that are available to insurance and risk management graduates. Almost 100 percent of our majors and about half of our minors have chosen to work in insurance or related financial services offices because of the quality of the job offers they have received.
Our graduates are recruited for employment in insurance companies, corporate risk management departments, banks, insurance agencies and brokerages, human resource departments, financial planning offices, consulting organizations, government, and regulatory agencies. Graduates work as actuaries, brokers, claims adjusters, employee benefits specialists, financial planners, fraud investigators, risk analysts, and underwriters.

The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
In addition, all programs in the College of Business are accredited by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the premier accrediting association of business programs.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
Students have many sources of financial support for their studies, including financial aid, work-study programs, veterans' benefits, and special scholarships for entering freshmen and transfer students.
In addition, the College of Business offers a variety of scholarships. Entering freshmen compete for Gongaware Scholarships—and the Networks Scholarship for students aspiring to any financial services career.
Annually, insurance and risk management majors and minors compete for more than 40 scholarships worth over $50,000 that are made possible by members of the ISU Insurance Advisory Council and other industry leaders. There also is a scholarship for students who are fluent in Spanish. In addition, students compete in a variety of national competitions, annually winning more than $30,000.
