Description:
The University offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) and a bachelor of science (B.S.) in mathematics education.
The Mathematics Education Program prepares students to teach mathematics in junior high, middle school, and high school.
Students complete a core of mathematics courses in areas such as:
In addition, students complete professional education courses to prepare them for teaching.
Before graduating, all mathematics education students work as student teachers and obtain experience in providing education to middle and high school students. In addition, many of our mathematics teaching students provide help with mathematics for area students from middle and high schools. Students can also participate in the SMART program developed by the mathematics education faculty.
Advisors work with each student in the selection of courses prior to registration each semester. Each student's study benefits from use of the Center of Mathematics Education Resource Library. In addition, there are opportunities for employment tutoring in the Mathematics Resource Center.
Mathematics education majors can join and participate in the student chapter of the honorary mathematics fraternity, Pi Mu Epsilon.
Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs—which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 25 countries.

In addition, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science awards scholarships, including the Hazel Nelson Lobb Memorial, Gladys Gillman Taylor Scholarship, Gary Erwin Memorial Scholarship, Dr. Vesper D. Moore Memorial Scholarship, Alton D. and Juanita S. Andrews Memorial Scholarship, Muyrel M. Blaikie Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics, and the Stanley Scholarship.
