Graduate Music Education Curriculum

M.M. (32 semester hours minimum)
Area of Specialization: Music Education

Outline of Curricular Requirements:

Review:
Certain review courses may be required on the basis of the student's scores on the Graduate Music Placement Examination. While credit in such courses is counted as a part of the load during the term(s) in which they are taken, the credit does not count toward the requirements of the degree.

Research:

Three hours, MUS 609, Research in Music (3 hours) or a research course in any department in the University, if approved by the Department of Music. Music 609 may be counted among the hours in related music courses.

Major Area:

Twelve or Eleven hours in Music Education courses, including Music 638, The Music Curriculum (3 hours) and one of the following courses:

Music 638 (3) The Music Curriculum

A maximum of 8 hours in music workshops will be counted toward the Master's degree. These workshop credits may be divided between the Major Area (up to a maximum of 4 hours) and the Related Music Area. A workshop may be repeated once with the consent of the Graduate Music Adviser.

Related Music Courses:

Eleven or Twelve hours in music, including two hours of ensemble and/or performance study. For thesis option, six hours must be Music 699. Thesis in Music Education (6 hours).

One-Half of the Credit Hours Must Be Courses Numbered 600 or Above, Not Counting the Review Courses.

Outside The Department:
Six hours of graduate study outside the Department of Music. For students professionalizing a standard certificate these six hours must be in professional education.

Master Of Education-Curriculum And Instruction

The Master of Education program in the School of Education permits a student with undergraduate credentials in music to professionalize his or her certification through the Department of Music. A student enrolled in that program must take a minimum of 6 hours in the Department of Music if professionalizing an undergraduate major in music. Student who hold an Early Childhood, Kindergarten-Primary, or Elementary education endorsement with an undergraduate minor in music must take 3 hours in the Department of Music to professionalize the minor in music. The Graduate Music Placement Examinations are required of students professionalizing a music certificate. Students who do not receive a satisfactory score on these exams will be required to enroll in the appropriate review courses. Credit for these courses will not be counted toward the hours required to professionalize the certificate. All graduate students who are pursuing this program and who have passed the Performance Audition Placement Examination are eligible to enroll for principal instrument study. Courses which will be approved to satisfy the 3 hours or 6 hours of professionalization component are the following:

Guest Special Admission:
Graduate students who are not enrolled in a degree program at Indiana State University and who hold the Guest Special Admission status who wish to take six hours of music to professionalize their certification must satisfy this requirement by taking two of the following courses:

Music 604 (3) Philosophies of Music Education
Music 605 (3) Supervision of Music
Music 638 (3) The Music Curriculum
Music 646 (3) Analytical Listening for the Classroom
Music 695 (3) General Music in the Secondary School

*These students will not be required to take the Graduate Music Placement Examinations.
