Graduate Music History and Literature Curriculum

M.M. (32 semester hours minimum)
Area of Specialization: Music History and Literature

Outline of Curricular Requirements:

Review:
Certain review courses may be required on the basis of the student's scores on the Graduate Music Placement Examinations. While credit in such courses is counted as a part of the load during the term(s) in which they are taken, the credit does not count toward the requirements of the degree.

Research:

Three hours; Music 609, Research in Music (3 hours) or a research course in any department in the University, if approved by the Department of Music. Music 609 may be counted among the hours in related music courses. If the research course is taken in another department, it may be counted among the 6 hours required outside the area of specialization.

Residency: An academic year of residency is required.

Major Area:

Music 535 (3) Vocal Literature for the Solo Voice
Music 610 (3) Choral Literature

Music 554 (3) Music in the Baroque and Classical Eras
Music 656 (3) Symphonic Music
Music 555 (3) Music in the Romantic Era

Music 556 (3) Music in the Twentieth-Century

Related Music Courses:

Eleven or twelve hours in music, including a thesis in Music History and Literature (Music 699- 6 hours), two hours of ensemble and/or performance study, and at least one of the following courses in music theory or composition which may be chosen from among the following courses :

Six hours of music theory courses and/or composition courses and/or academic courses outside the Department of Music.

Foreign Language Requirement:

A reading knowledge of German or French must be demonstrated. Another language, if germane to the student's research, may be substituted upon approval of Music Theory, History and Literature Division. Proficiency will be demonstrated by a satisfactory score on the Graduate School Foreign Language Test.
