Graduate Music Performance Curriculum

M.M. (32 semester hours minimum)
Area of Specialization: Music Performance

Outline of Curricular Requirements:

Review:
Certain review courses may be required on the basis of the student's scores on the Graduate Music Placement Examinations. While credit in such courses is counted as part of the load during the term(s) in which they are taken, the credit does not count toward the requirements of the degree.

Research:

Three hours; Music 609, Research in Music (3 Hours) or a research course in any department in the University, if approved by the Department of Music. Music 609 may be counted among the hours in related music courses. If the research course is taken in another department, it may be counted among the 6 hours required outside area of specialization.

Residency: An academic year of residency is required.

Major Area:

Eleven or twelve hours in Performance to include Major Applied Study, recital(s), and participation in ensemble(s) to be chosen from the following courses:

Music 676* (1-3) Major applied study (repeatable 7-8 hours)
Music 679 (1-2) Recital (repeatable 1-2 hours)
Music 553 (1) Ensembles (0-2 hours)

*only one hour may be taken with a non-specialist performance instructor

Two to six hours of requirements depending upon performance area:

Ensembles: 0-3 hours which must include all 553 hours in the major area.

Outside the Area of Specialization:

Six hours of elective courses within the Department of Music and/or academic courses outside the Department of Music, in consultation with the student's performance instructor and the graduate music advisor. Workshop credit may not be applied to this requirement.

In general, one-half of the credit hours must be in courses numbered 600 or above, not counting review courses.
