Each graduate student entering Indiana State University must declare
a principal or major instrument with which to perform an audition.
The audition must be completed prior to registration for graduate
study.
- For all graduate students
except those pursuing the Music Performance Area of Specialization:
Each entering graduate student must audition for at least
one performance faculty member from the appropriate division,
and, if possible, for a committee of performance faculty members.
Expected performance standards will be commensurate with that
of completed undergraduate junior level. A student who passes
the audition will be exempt from further performance study.
Exempted students have the option of enrolling in Music 676
for total credit of not more than four hours. A student who
does not pass the audition must enroll in and successfully complete
Music 600 for 1 or 2 hours with no credit toward graduation.
- For students pursuing the
Music Performance Area of Specialization:
Each entering graduate student must audition prior to enrollment
in the first hour of performance study for a committee of at
least two, and preferable three or more, performance faculty
members from the appropriate division. Conditional admission
may be granted on the basis of a tape or audition before one
faculty member; auditions by tape are acceptable only if travel
distance would pose an extreme hardship. A student who does
not pass the audition must enroll in and successfully complete
Music 600 (1-2 hours) prior to enrollment in performance study
(Music 676).
Each division may specify differing audition requirements,
but the repertoire should be at least that of a senior recital
level. Prospective students may obtain audition requirements
from the appropriate division coordinator: Voice; String; Percussion;
Woodwind and Brass; and Keyboard.
- For all students pursuing
the Wind Conducting Area of Specialization:
Each entering graduate student must submit a VHS format videotape
of his/her current or most recent ensemble conducting to the
Office of Band Organizations. The tape may be approximately
four to five minutes in length and may include literature of
the applicant's choice. An audition on your principal instrument
is still required.
- For all students pursuing
the Choral Conducting Area of Specialization:
Each entering graduate student must submit a VHS format videotape
of his/her current or most recent ensemble conducting to the
Director of Choral Activities. The tape may be approximately
four to five minutes in length and may include literature of
the applicant's choice. An audition on your principal instrument
is still required.
- Non-Music Student:
Graduate students who desire to take individual instruction
for elective credit even though majoring in subjects other than
music may do so if they demonstrate sufficient skills in an
audition before one or more music faculty members.
