Welcome to a Tradition of Excellence!

Indiana State University is one of the finest universities in the midwestern United States. More than 11,000 students attend classes and take advantage of the University's numerous activities and facilities. The University is proud of the national reputation of its academic programs, including those offered by the Department of Music.

Through its diverse programs, the Department of Music provides students with many opportunities for musical involvement and professional training. Approximately 300 students major in music each year, while several hundred others participate in performing ensembles, performance studies, and music courses. With its excellent faculty, curriculum, and new rehearsal/teaching facilities, the Department of Music is a major contributor to the cultural life of the University, Terre Haute, and the state of Indiana.

The band program at Indiana state University is directed toward providing a quality musical, educational, and cultural experience for all interested students. Presently there are three concert wind organizations, ISU marching band, basketball band, jazz ensemble, and jazz combos that accommodate the varied interests and talent levels of ISU students. Whether you are a music major training to become a professional performer/teacher, or someone who simply enjoyed your high school experience and wants to continue it at the university level, Indiana State University Bands has a place for you.

Students from all majors representing every college and school within the University participate in the band program. Membership is an excellent way to become involved in university life and to get acquainted with successful college students who share a similar interest in continuing their musical experience. Rehearsal schedules are less demanding than most high school bands, and they are planned at a time of day that does not conflict with most class schedules or prime study time. The values of participation are enhanced by scholarships, marching band grants, an extensive inventory of musical instruments and uniforms, regular performances with guest artists, and an experienced conducting staff.

We want you to be a part of this great tradition, either as a performer or a member of our audiences. Please consider being involved with Indiana State University Bands.

    College Band--Opportunity and Involvement

Thousands of high school seniors are presently facing the beginning of their college careers with a great deal of eager anticipation and enthusiasm. Activities such as bands or other musical organizations cannot only involve and acquaint you with the University community, but also provide an excellent relief valve for the rigors of the classroom.

Here are some important features of the ISU Bands:

    • Band participation is open to all students. Band memberships are not limited to music majors. In fact, the majority of our members represent the total University, ranging from business to criminology, computer science to social sciences, education to nursing, physical education to aerospace technology, and virtually every other major field.
    • Band takes a small amount of time. Our schedule is frequently less time-consuming than most high school programs. ISU bands meet on a regular class schedule, and we understand the student's need to concentrate on academics. We are seeking students who enjoy music and wish to continue performing.
    • Band includes students with average musical abilities. Students are sometimes overly concerned about their talent level. Many band members are not super-star performers, and most students who successfully complete their high school program will find a place available for them in one of the ISU bands.
    • Band is a credit course. Each ensemble offers one hour of credit, or may be taken for "0" credit, through the Department of Music. Students may elect to participate for the entire year or during one term only.

Performances include those compositions that require varied and specialized instrumentation. The ensemble has recorded compact discs on the Truemedia, Brain and ELF labels. Guest artists, including Karel Husa, Frederick Fennell, John Paynter, Philip Smith, Diane Bish, Vincent DiMartino, and William Warfield, frequently appear with this organization.
