APPLICATION MATERIALS FOR ADMISSION (SCHOOL OF MUSIC)

Each new graduate music student pursuing the concentration in conducting (choral or wind), music education, or music performance must submit the following application materials to the School of Music, addressed to the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Music:

  1. Application for Admission
  2. Registration for the Graduate Music Placement Examinations
  3. Provisional and/or On-campus Music Performance Audition
  4. Personal Résumé (Vita)
  5. Statement of Purpose
  6. Letters (3) of Recommendation

MUSIC PERFORMANCE AUDITIONS

Each new graduate music student pursuing the concentration in conducting (choral or wind), music education, or music performance must do a music performance audition. Audition requirements for these concentrations can be downloaded by clicking the following links:

Provisional auditions in DVD or YouTube format are acceptable only if travel distance poses an extreme hardship. At least one member of the music performance faculty should evaluate the provisional audition. If a student submits a provisional audition, an on-campus audition must still be done. Mail the DVD or submit the YouTube to the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Music.

On-campus auditions must be done by every new graduate music student and normally take place during the first week of classes. At least two members of the music performance faculty should evaluate the on-campus audition. The music for both the provisional and on-campus auditions may be the same. On-campus auditions are scheduled with the Coordinator of the Music Performance Division.

MUSIC EDUCATION RESEARCH PAPER

Each new graduate music student pursuing the concentration in music education must submit a research paper as part of the admission process. This paper can emphasize the pedagogical, theoretical or historical component of music. Mail the paper to the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in the School of Music.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS IN MUSIC

Each graduate music student applying for a graduate assistantship in music can download the following forms by clicking the following College of Graduate and Professional Studies links:

GRADUATE MUSIC PLACEMENT EXAMINATIONS (GMPEs)

Each new graduate music student pursuing the concentration in conducting (choral or wind), music education, or music performance must take the following Graduate Music Placement Examinations:

  • Music Performance Audition
  • Music Theory Placement Examination
  • Music History and Literature Placement Examination
  • Keyboard Proficiency Examination

No fee is charged to take these examinations. With the exception of the Music Performance Audition, examinations are normally scheduled during the week prior to the beginning of the Fall semester or the Spring semester.

TRANSFER OF CREDIT

Each new graduate music student at Indiana State University who has transferred from a regionally accredited institution should download the following forms by clicking the College of Graduate and Professional Studies links for transfer credit information:

The School of Music at ISU will accept no more than six hours of transfer credit toward an ISU graduate music concentration. Mail these completed forms to the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in the School of Music.
