Department of Music

Graduate Studies in Music

The Department of Music offers four concentrations of study for graduate music students on the M.M. degree: Conducting (Choral or Wind), Music Comparative Studies, Music Education, and Music Performance. The number of hours for each concentration totals 34 credits. An outline of curricular requirements includes:

Review Courses (0 credits)

  • Certain review courses may be required on the basis of a student's score on the Graduate Music Placement Examinations. While credit in such courses counts as a part of the load during the semester/term in which they are taken, the credit does not count toward requirements of the degree. Review courses include MUS 600 (1 credit), MUS 601 (2 credits), MUS 602 (2 credits), and MUS 606 (1 credit).

Research Course (3 credits)

  • MUS 609 Research in Music (3 credits) counts as the research course on all concentrations.

Core Courses (10 credits)

  • Four areas of study comprise the core music courses: music theory courses (one course selected from MUS 545, MUS 546, or MUS 549, 3 credits), music history and literature courses (one course selected from MUS 552, MUS 554, or MUS 556, 3 credits), ensembles (two courses selected from MUS 517, MUS 519, MUS 553, MUS 559, MUS 569, or MUS 588, 1 credit), and music performance (two courses selected from MUS 676, 1 credit). MUS 611 Oral Comprehensive Exam (0 credits) completes the requirement for this area.

  • Conducting (Choral): MUS 604 or MUS 625 (3 credits); MUS 557 or MUS 610 (2 or 3 credits); MUS 511, MUS 664, MUS 676Z (12 credits); MUS 679 (2 credits); Electives (2 or 1 credits)
  • Conducting (Wind): MUS 604 or MUS 625 (3 credits), MUS 560 and MUS 620 (5 credits), MUS 676W (11 credits), MUS 679 (2 credits)
  • Music Comparative Studies: MUS 612 and MUS 613 (6 credits); MUS 545, MUS 546, MUS 549, MUS 552, MUS 554, or MUS 556 (3 credits); MUS 699 (6 credits); Electives (6 credits)
  • Music Education: MUS 604 and MUS 625 (6 credits); MUS 528, MUS 529, MUS 530, MUS 536, MUS 620, MUS 676 (for Wind, Percussion, or String, 6 credits) or MUS 504, MUS 505, MUS 506, MUS 507, MUS 676 (for Piano, 6 credits) or MUS 511, MUS 535, MUS 557, MUS 610, MUS 664, MUS 676 (for Voice, 6 credits); MUS 697 and Electives or MUS 699 and Electives (9 credits)
