The Department of Music has a growing tradition of excellence, and Indiana State music graduates have distinguished
themselves in a variety of ways. Many are outstanding teachers in public schools, colleges and universities, and private studios,
while others have achieved recognition in such specialized areas as music business, jazz, or performance on the world's opera
stages. The music faculty of more than 40 scholars and teachers share an uncommonly strong commitment to teaching.
Performance is an integral part of each student's musical education. Among the many ensemble opportunities at Indiana State
University are the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, University Orchestra, University Singers, Masterworks Chorale, Madrigal
Singers, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Steel Drum Band, Jazz Combos, and chamber music.
Indiana State's $7.25 million Center for Performing and Fine Arts building represents the university's commitment to music
education. The facility is a 46,000 square-foot, three story building with state-of-the art teaching, rehearsal, and performance
facilities.
The Department of Music prepares professional educators and musicians, provides every student at the University an opportunity
to experience music, and serves as a center of musical art and culture for the Wabash Valley area. In addition to its primary
responsibilities to music majors, the Department also provides a number of courses and activities for non-music majors.
Approximately 300 students are enrolled as majors in the Department of Music. This size is ideal as it allows for maximum
interaction with our faculty while still providing comprehensive opportunities for aspiring musicians and educators. The faculty
includes specialists on band and orchestral instruments as well as piano and voice, and specialists in Piano Pedagogy, Composition,
Music Education, Music History and Literature, and Music Theory.
