Brian Kilp
Dr. Brian Kilp is currently Principal Horn with the Sinfonia da Camera, Ian Hobson, Conductor, in Champaign, IL. In May of 2007, Sinfonia toured in Beijing and Shanghai, P.R. of China. He is also Principal Horn of the Terre Haute Symphony, David Bowden, Conductor, and Principal Horn of the Danville Symphony Jeremy Swerling, Conductor. Brian is also a member of Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band, with which he has toured 18 states. Brian is a very busy freelance hornist in the Indianapolis region, and has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Opera, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Lafayette Symphony, The Prairie Ensemble, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, and various other ensembles. Brian is a founding member of the The Ambassador Brass, and in June/July 2007, “The Brass” toured for over two weeks presenting recitals and music seminars in Bangkok, Maha Sarakham, Pattaya, and 8 other cities in Thailand. For 2008, The Ambassador Brass will perform in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phitsanuloke, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, and will serve as the adjudicating panel for the first Thai National Wind and Brass Competition, July 1-4 in Bangkok.
Dr. Kilp joined the faculty of Indiana State in 1998 where he is currently Associate Professor of Music. In June 2002, Dr. Kilp was appointed Visiting Guest Professor of Horn of the Shenyang and Dalian Conservatories of Music in the P.R. of China, and in 2006, was appointed Visiting Guest Professor at Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University in Thailand. He has been Principal Horn and on the Faculty of the Classical Music Festival Orchestra in Eisenstadt, Austria, from 2000-2006, and will again participate as Principal Horn in 2008. Originally from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, he holds degrees from The Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (B.M.), New Mexico State University (M.M.), and a D.M.A. in Horn Performance from The University of Arizona.
A champion of new music, over the past 9 years he has commissioned 14 new works featuring the horn, including one that premiered at the 2000 IHS Beijing International Horn Festival, and another which was premiered at the 2003 IHS International Symposium in Bloomington, IN. In the summer of 2001-2007, Brian has presented master classes and performed at the Conservatories in Sichuan Province in Chengdu, Beijing Central, Tianjin, Xi’an, and in Shenyang, China, as well as in Thailand and Singapore, and in 2002 was a recitalist at the 5th International Foreign Music Cultural Exchange Festival in Shenyang. Brian regularly appears at IHS events.
A long-time champion of Jim Decker’s “iVASI: the Video Conductor”, Brian often appears as a Conn-Selmer Artist/Clinician and Jupiter Music Educational Clinician. His CD entitled: Vox Corno: “The Art of the Transcription”, with pianist Martha Krasnican, was released in Oct. 2004, and is available from TAP Music Sales, Walking Frog Records, and CDbaby.com, and the published music is available at www.walkingfrog.com.
