S. Alex Ruthmann

Alex Ruthmann joins the music faculty at ISU this year as assistant professor of music education. Prior to his appointment, he taught middle school general music at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, as well as courses in music education, music technology, and music theory at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

Dr. Ruthmann received a Bachelor of Music degree in music technology and horn performance from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. After a stint in the music education technology industry, he returned to pursue Master of Music and Ph.D. in Music Education degrees at Oakland University. He specializes in secondary general music methods, non-traditional music courses in the schools, composing curriculum and pedagogy, and music education technology.

An active researcher and writer, Dr. Ruthmann has authored lesson materials for the Scott Foresman/Silver Burdett Making Music general music curriculum series, as well as articles and chapters published in national and international music education journals and publications. He also serves on the advisory board for the Center for Applied Research in Musical Understanding and the editorial board for the International Journal of Music Education - Practice.

At ISU, Dr. Ruthmann serves as a general music and music education technology specialist, teaching methods courses and supervising student teachers. Known for his innovative approach to teaching middle school general music as a Composers' Workshop, he frequently presents at local and state music conferences and at the national and international levels, including presentations at recent National Association for Music Education (MENC) and International Society for Music Education (ISME) conferences.
