Strings

Indiana State University offers the string student an ideal combination of private lessons, performing opportunities, and classroom learning. String study at ISU means regular, personal attention, and exciting group experiences.

String Division Faculty
Applied Study

Weekly hour and half-hour private lessons are available, taught by dedicated and experienced faculty, and carefully arranged to fit the student's schedule. For those students who do not own instruments, the Department of Music maintains a collection of fine string instruments and bows for use by music students.

University Symphony
The University Symphony is a 60- to 70-piece full orchestra which rehearses twice weekly, and presents four concerts each academic year. Membership in this for-credit course is open to music majors and non-majors by audition. The ensemble performs in a variety of musical genres, including symphony, concerto, oratorio, and opera, and regularly collaborates with faculty and professional soloists. In addition, it is a resident ensemble for the annual Paul W. Hagan Concerto/Aria Audition Prize, winners of which perform with the University Symphony. Recent repertoire has been both diverse and challenging: Bach: Orchestral Suite No.1, Mozart: Symphony No. 36, Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 , Mahler: Symphony No. 4, Shostakovitch: Symphony No. 5, Copland: Appalachian Spring: Suite, and Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite. The orchestral experience at ISU embodies dedication, high standards, and cameraderie. In short, the best students playing the best music!

Chamber Music
Participating in chamber music is an important and rewarding part of the ISU music experience. Students may register for String Ensemble credit and play in a string quartet, or another combination of string instruments with or without piano. Regular rehearsals are arranged each week, coached by a faculty member, and Departmental Chamber Ensemble recitals occur twice a semester. In addition, student string quartets are regularly requested for important University occasions, such as Commencement, Honor Day, and Presidential banquets. There are many opportunities to perform for appreciative audiences at ISU!

Courses
In addition to the music theory, history, literature, and education courses available to all music majors, specialized courses for string students such as String Techniques, String Literature and Materials, and Chamber Music Literature, are offered. Serious string students will find a challenging, stimulating, and rewarding course of study at ISU.

Barnes Lecture Series
A rare opportunity is provided ISU string students by the James W.Barnes Lectureship in Music, as the String Division brings a well-known clinician/educator to campus every three years for a residency consisting of lectures, masterclasses and clinics. Recent guests include Robert Culver, an internationally- known string educator, conductor and violist and cellist Carter Enyeart from the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
