Department of Music
University Symphony
The University Symphony is a 60- to 70-piece full orchestra which
rehearses twice weekly, and presents four concerts each academic year.
Membership in this for-credit course is open to music majors and
non-majors by audition. The ensemble performs in a variety of musical
genres, including symphony, concerto, oratorio, and opera, and
regularly collaborates with faculty and professional soloists. In
addition, it is a resident ensemble for the annual Paul W. Hagan
Concerto/Aria Audition Prize, winners of which perform with the
University Symphony. Recent repertoire has been both diverse and
challenging: Bach: Orchestral Suite No.1, Mozart: Symphony No. 36,
Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 , Mahler: Symphony No. 4, Shostakovitch:
Symphony No. 5, Copland: Appalachian Spring: Suite, and Stravinsky:
Pulcinella Suite. The orchestral experience at ISU embodies dedication,
high standards, and cameraderie. In short, the best students playing
the best music!
