Christina Selby, an assistant professor of mathematics at Rose-Hulman, will talk at the Math and CS department seminar from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6. The talk will take place in Root Hall room A-187 - one of the conference rooms in the Math/CS wing of the building. Details on the talk are below.
Title:"What You Lookin' At?" The Development of the Geometric Calibration Model for the Mercury Dual Imaging System.
Abstract:The MESSENGER spacecraft is the first orbital mission to Mercury, and the on-board Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) is acquiring a wealth of images that are being used to help us learn about the history of our universe. In order to complete accurate planetary image mosaics and build topographic maps of Mercury, precise instrument pointing knowledge is required. This pointing can be characterized by modeling several individual components of the system, including the spacecraft attitude, instrument mounting alignment, and pivot position. This talk will focus on the many challenges of creating the pivot model for MDIS, and the variety of mathematical tools that were utilized to develop the model that is operating in flight today.
