The public is invited to an artist’s reception on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m in the University Art Gallery. Synar will also present a lecture about her work and career on the same evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
Deception Pass evolved from the artist’s interest in “perceptual phenomena in the landscape,†resulting in an expansive showcase that incorporates two and three dimensions, sound, and video. The waters off the coast of Washington state hold such phenomena, a marine navigation channel with distinct features foreshadowing the topography of the marine bottom. In the exhibit, Synar juxtaposes large topographic images of the ocean floor with the moving video of the ocean’s surface, simultaneously peaceful and perilous.
Synar currently teaches at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Her educational and creative background as a sculptor, specifically metal casting, has lead her studio research to installation art, video, and other time-based media. Synar has exhibited her work internationally and received various accolades including an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Grant and research grants from Southern Illinois University and The University of Alabama.
The Deception Pass Project is made possible with assistance from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This exhibition also appreciates the generous support of the ISU Department of Art, the College of Art and Sciences, and the Indiana Arts Commission through its regional arts partner, Arts Illiana.
The University Art Gallery is located in the Center for Performing and Fine Arts at the corner of Seventh and Chestnut streets. The Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. All gallery events are free and the facility is wheelchair accessible.
