Information technology campaigns recognized in national competition

Indiana State University recently captured two “best of category” awards in a national competition for information technology communications efforts. The awards were presented during the 35th annual conference of the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services (SIGUCCS), which took place Oct. 7-10 in Orlando, Fla.

Indiana State’s “Cyber Security Haunted House” campaign, aimed at keeping students safe on the Internet, was honored in the general service campaign materials category. The integrated campaign used a variety of vehicles and promotional pieces to emphasize specific security themes.

“The campaign’s very originally conceived haunted house brought each of the security concepts to life in a way that must have had broad appeal to students,” judges said. “The content in each of the corresponding promotional pieces was well-written and clear â€" and the ideas were creative and the themes employed compelling. The overall effect was outstanding.”

Indiana State’s “Get in the Game” student technology guide was recognized in the general service promotional materials category.

The 60-page guide, depicting ISU mascot “Sycamore Sam” on the cover as an excited TV game show contestant, provides information on where and how students can access specific technology services. Printed booklets were distributed to all ISU students at the start of the 2007-08 school year and the guide is also available online.

“This competition represents some excellent work from institutions both large and small. It’s quite an accomplishment to have our work considered the best in the nation in two categories,” said Ed Kinley, associate vice president and chief information officer. “We are proud of this accomplishment and of the level of service we are able to provide to our students, faculty and staff.”

Receiving honorable mentions in the promotional category were Indiana University, the University of North Florida, and the University of California-Davis. In the general service category, honorable mentions went to Louisiana State University, the University of Delaware, and the University of Notre Dame.

The Haunted House campaign was produced by Office of Information Technology staff members Emily Gruenert, Kenneth Janz, Erin Henderson, Micheal Moore, Dave Bigney and Kathryn Elson. The student technology guide was produced by Gruenert, Janz, Kinley, Yancy Phillips and Robert Jefferson.

SIGUCCS is an association of professionals who support and manage the diverse aspects of information technology services at higher education institutions. Its primary goal is to provide a forum for professional development through conferences, publications and other services.
