Help Indiana State fill a bus with food donations Nov. 7

November 1 2007

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Terre Haute community is invited to join with Indiana State University alumni, students, staff and faculty in an effort to fill an entire Sycamore Bus with non-perishable food items to help those in need this holiday season.

Bring your food items or monetary donations to Dede Plaza on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Donated items will be taken to Catholic Charities, a Second Harvest location. Persons who would like to ride on the bus and help unload at Catholic Charities, may purchase a seat for a $25 donation.

Alumni and members of the community can park in the Hulman Memorial Student Union lot, accessible from 5th Street, for 10 minutes for free while dropping off their items.

ISU’s effort will be part of a nationwide effort to set a new Guinness World Record for the most canned food donations collected during a single event, nationwide.

Last year, Jam the Bus delivered 997 pounds of donated food items to Catholic Charities. This year, Indiana State is aiming for donations totaling 1,000 pounds.

Jam the Bus/Caring Cans is just part of an on-going effort to easing hunger in the Wabash Valley.

Sodexho at Indiana State University Dining Services received a $20,000 grant from the Sodexho Foundation to provide food to Catholic Charities, which dispersed it to its 18 local feeding centers over a 12-week period this past summer.

In addition to the 24,663 pounds (a little more than 2 tons) of food items received via the grant, roughly 70 pounds of surplus food items are picked up daily by Catholic Charities from Indiana State’s dining facilities to help with local feeding programs, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Those daily donations added up to more than 22,000 pounds of food in 2006.

Jam the Bus/Caring Cans is sponsored by Hulman Memorial Student Union Board, Black Student Union, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Activities and organizations, Residential Life, Center for Public Service and Community Engagement and Sodexho.
