Students gain insight into motorsports industry at Las Vegas trade show

Four Indiana State University students recently served as interns at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas and gained valuable insight and a behind the scenes look into the motorsports industry.

Seniors Stephen Castor of Sheridan and Ryan Prosch of Shelbyville joined sophomore Chris Maurer of Marshall, Ill. and graduate student Brad Heiny of Noblesville at the four-day event that showcased more than 2,000 new products and attracted more than 100,000 industry experts.

The SEMA internship program not only provides students with a valuable learning tool, but also offers member companies and exhibitors an opportunity to observe potential employees.

“The SEMA show was a great opportunity to meet and greet industry professionals,” said Heiny, an MBA student who holds a bachelor's degree in automotive technology management. “We had access to virtually every business in the automotive aftermarket arena. Getting the chance to work with all of these companies at once only happens once a year, and that is SEMA.”

Industry professionals were more than willing to give interns an inside look into the profession.

“The internship program allowed me to gain an insight into what is needed to expand a business in today’s world,” said Maurer, a dual major in automotive technology management and physics. “I was able to see and talk with industry representatives about how they have gotten where they are at today as well as gain an understanding of what they do.”

For first-time interns, the event went well beyond their expectations.

“It was a very beneficial experience,” said Castor, an aerospace administration major. “I had pretty high expectations going in to it and they were greatly exceeded. Everyone in the industry was more than willing to help us out or give us any advice they thought might help us in the future.”

Prosch, an automotive technology management major, said the SEMA show “was everything I expected it to be. I would go back every year if I could. Hopefully I will have some job offers. I made a lot of contacts that were very interested.”

SEMA interns represent some of the most promising students from all over the country preparing for careers in the automotive industry. In order to participate in this internship program, students had to meet a minimum class standing and submit a written essay detailing why they should be chosen.
