Mary Kay Sommers, who is on leave from her position as an elementary school principal in Fort Collins, Colo., will speak on “Reflections of School Leadership: What Will the Principal of Tomorrow Need'†beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Clabber Girl second floor meeting room.
“It is an honor to have Dr. Sommers speaking to the ISU and Vigo County educational community,†said Joshua Powers, chair of ISU’s department of educational leadership, administration and foundations. “She is a graduate of the elementary education program here and gone on to positions of significant importance to the field, most notably the presidency of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. She has fond memories of her time here at ISU and working as a teacher and principal in Indiana. It will be a joy to have her back and show her all the exciting work that is occurring with the preparation of future teachers and school administrators.â€
Sommers, through her association work, helps educate federal officials about what is best for America’s children as manifested in the No Child Left Behind legislation. She has testified before Congress about the act and the need for reform in high stakes testing on behalf of 30,000 elementary and middle school principals across the country.
While in Terre Haute, Sommers also will meet with ISU’s department of educational leadership to discuss how federal policy issues can best be integrated into curricula to prepare principals and superintendents, as well as with elementary education faculty, who are piloting an elementary education teacher preparation program.
