Diversity Film Series to show Daughters of the Dust Feb. 7

February 1 2008

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The fourth film in Indiana State University’s Diversity Film Series, "Daughters of the Dust,” will be shown Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Events Area of the Cunningham Memorial Library to celebrate African-American Awareness Month.

Following the film, a discussion will be facilitated by The Sistah Circle Book Club. The book club was founded at ISU in the fall of 2004 with the intention of gathering intelligent women together to discuss African-American literature and literacy.

“Daughters of the Dust” is a 1991 independent film written and directed by Julie Dash. It tells the story of three generations of Gullah women at the turn of the 20th century and focuses on the family's migration from the Sea Islands to the American mainland.

The movie was praised for both its rich language and use of song, and for its use of imagery. Another unusual feature of the film is that the much of the dialogue is spoken in the Gullah language. In 2004, “Daughters of the Dust,” Dash’s first feature-length film and the first feature-length film produced by a black woman, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

The film series will continue on Feb. 26 “Children of a Lesser God,” kicking off a month long series on Disability Awareness and concludes April 8 with “Iron-Jawed Angels,” highlighting Human Rights Awareness.

The series, sponsored by the President’s Commission for the Enhancement of Diversity Resources, is free and open to the public. For more information on the film series or the commission, please contact the Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action at 812-237-2877.
