ISU Hosts Jazzfest Feb. 16

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State University will host a day of jazz Feb. 16 with performances by 28 middle and high school jazz bands; the ISU Jazz Ensemble and guest artist Charley Davis.

Davis has been both studio musician and soloist, active in the Los Angeles music scene for more than 20 years. His trumpet playing can be heard on motion picture scores and television as well as on countless recordings and commercials. He has worked in Las Vegas showrooms and recorded with the Big Bands of Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, and Bob Florence.

He currently teaches at California State University at Long Beach and Citrus College in Glendora, Calif. Davis is also a clinician for Vincent Bach Corporation and a consultant to Kanstul Musical Instruments.

Jazzfest will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. as groups take the stage in Tilson Auditorium and the Center for Performing and Fine Arts, Room 159 and in the Recital Hall. Bands and combos from Terre Haute, Crown Point, Bloomington, Center Grove, Brazil, Newburgh and Ellettsville are scheduled to participate.

In addition to performances by the schools throughout the day, there will be brass, woodwind and percussion masterclasses conducted at 12:30 p.m. A concert by Davis will take place at 5 p.m. in Tilson Auditorium.

The day performances and masterclasses are free. Admission to the evening concert is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
