“This year we’ve added Experience ISU,†said Rebecca Libler, associate dean of the College of Education. “They will see how ISU uses experiential learning.â€
Guidance counselors attending the day-long conference can choose to visit the laboratory where students study motorsports management. They also could visit the College of Business Financial Trading Room to see where students research pricing trends and develop investment portfolios or the Center for Instruction, Research and Design where students use the latest instructional media and multimedia design.
The day, sponsored by the College of Education and the Office of Admissions, provides additional professional development for counselors as well as showcases what Indiana State has to offer.
“The better portion of the day is professional development for the counselors,†Libler said. “There are practical classes for people out in the field and research from faculty and doctoral students.â€
As part of that, Peggy Hines, director of the National Center for Transforming School Counseling at The Education Trust in Washington, D.C., will be the keynote speaker in Dede 1 of the Hulman Memorial Student Union. She plans to discuss current national issues in education and the role counselors play in closing achievement gaps and ensuring academic success.
Matt Fleck, an academic and career specialist with the Indiana Department of Education, will update counselors on graduation requirements and new legislation. He also will discuss changes to the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress - Plus (ISTEP+) and Graduation Qualifying Exam tests.
Other topics to be discussed include “When Traditional High Schools Don’t Fit, What Should I Wear?†“Parent Engagement,†and “Recognition and Effective Intervention for Students with Oppositional Disorder/Conduct Disorder.â€
The day is free for counselors, although there is a cost of $235 for those who want to attend for graduate credit. A continental breakfast and lunch are provided. For more information or to register on-line, visit http://coe.indstate.edu/cdoc/.
