Hews named to editorial board of international journal

TERRE HAUTE â€" An Indiana State University professor has recently been named to the editorial board of an international science journal.

Diana Hews, associate professor of biological sciences, was appointed to the editorial board of Integrative and Comparative Biology, a scientific journal published by Oxford University Press six times a year. The board, made up of members of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology, advises the editor in matters relating to journal policy.

“I am excited to become a more involved member of this society,” Hews said. “I am an integrative and comparative biologist and I look forward to furthering the education and research mission of SICB.”

Integrative biology uses multiple perspectives, which cross standard disciplinary boundaries within biology, and even across the sciences, in its research and training.

Hews has been a member of the society since she was a graduate student.

“It is an important society to graduate students and undergraduates in the biological sciences,” she said. “As an ‘umbrella organization’ for a number of different disciplines within the biological sciences, it is an outstanding place to be nurtured when developing as a scientist.”

The main contact within the society for most biologists is during the annual meeting and through the journal, Hews said. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles drawn from some of the symposia that are run each year during the annual meeting, which is attended by about 2,000 people each year. Besides having novel symposia designed around integrative topics, Hews indicated that the annual SICB conference also allows senior researchers to get updates on current research in multiple disciplines; many biological conferences are much more narrowly focused.

Hews’ previous editorial experience includes a recent three-year stint as a North American decision editor for the Animal Behavior Society’s international journal Animal Behaviour, one of the highest rated journals in that discipline. She also serves on the editorial board of two journals that publish peer-reviewed research articles on reptiles and amphibians, her taxonomic specialty.
